It's not only as good as face-to-face, it can be "even better than".

Here is a presentation I gave to the Global Form on Action Learning and Executive Development last June in Seoul.  (The file is 2 MB)  Download Global Forum – Second Life v3

You ask: Can you really build professional competencies in virtual worlds?
I say YES, you can, and I close this posting with an example called “Swift Trust”
I’m virtually sure we haven’t been around long enough to know exactly all that it takes, and not enough study has occurred to scientifically tease-out all of the nuance in today’s virtual competence.
In another blog entry you ask, “What changes my view of the future?” Well, not only does your Second Life presentation in this post help to guide my view, but it also demonstrates that competencies can be built in virtual worlds.
In that same vein, I’m attaching a link to a study on “Swift Trust”, which I believe is one of these competencies that may live outside of virtual worlds, but must be transformed in order to succeed when trying to be professional in virtual worlds:

Is “Swift Trust” the new digital age form of “assuming positive intent”? If so, maybe the millenials will be much better at collaborating than the boomers.
